Still Frame: Deadly Dames
Short stories inspired by random images...
I post images to inspire other writers, usually starting from a visual spark that leads me to a character, mood, or fragment of story. Still Frames is my occasional series of flash fiction and drabbles based on those images, a space for experimentation while I work on longer projects I can’t yet share. I don’t follow a set schedule—these pieces appear whenever an image or idea won’t leave me alone. If the images speak to you, I’d love for you to join in and share your own responses.
The man noticed her the moment she stepped through the door.
Women like that were impossible to ignore—black leather, a mouth made for trouble, a body made for sin. One hand gleamed crimson beneath the club lights. Blood or paint. He couldn’t tell.
He offered her a smoke. She accepted.
She let him buy the drinks. Let him tell the stories. Let him mistake her silence for fascination.
Predators often did.
When she finally smiled, he felt chosen.
By closing time, he followed her into the rain.
By sunrise, only her red fingerprints remained, blooming across his abandoned cigarette case.
She walked into the square with the bottle already lit. No speech. No warning. Just her and the flame, held steady in one hand like she’d practiced a thousand times before tonight. The crowd shifted as she moved straight to the pole where their flag still hung. She held the fire to it, surprised by how quickly it caught. Someone shouted for water. She watched the flag burn, then tossed the bottle under the nearest car. Some screamed as the car caught fire, others ran for cover before it exploded. She walked through the chaos as ash rained down on the square.
They come to me when there is nowhere left for them to go.
Not the ones still hoping for mercy, but the ones who have already learned how much the world is willing ignore. They arrive with names that no longer belong to them and hands that have stopped shaking only because shaking changes nothing.
I do not ask for reasons. I already know them.
They called it poison. Aqua Tofana. A bottle disguised as grace, passed hand to hand through women who were never allowed to refuse their circumstances.
They think I invented endings.
I only ever provided beginnings.
